Thursday June 23rd
Today was a super fun day - packed full of stuff to do! The majority of Perform Group's products are manufactured right here in the United States, actually IN Pennsylvania. The manufacturing plant (PGM) is about 30 minutes from the central location (TC) where I work. There is also an outlet store by PGM that I had been to before, shopping for skating costumes and fabric. The outlet has been there for over 30 years, the building has been there FOREVER and has been owned by Perform Group/Tighe since 1969. This is the original manufacturing facility. Anyway, Sara had arranged for all three interns to take a tour, along with Kristi, one of the assistants who had never been there. The four of us met there at 8am this morning and were taken on a 90 minute tour of the facility. It was incredible to see - we saw everything and were taken right up to all the machines. We basically saw how orders get put in, go through cutting (we got to watch the cutting machines work from about 2 feet away - super neat), assembly - different for Alpha and Curtain Call, appliques, glitz (we saw the machine that makes glitzes - awesome!), trims, all the sewing stations and teams - partially assembled costumes were whizzing around us on overhead racks as we walked through - all the way up to finishing and packing into boxes etc. After everything is packed it goes back to TC and is shipped from there - when I walk in to work every morning I come in through the warehouse and I walk through aisles of costumes/leos. Oh and the laser stone machine - how neat would it be to use that? We mainly got to see Alpha leos being assembled as teams are just starting to place orders for this year's leos. Some Curtain Call stock was being produced, stuff for the new catalog that comes out end of summer!
After our tour, we headed over to the outlet to check that out. I was the only one who had been there before and I love shopping in stores where the primary product is stretchy and sparkly - plus I get an employee discount! We checked out all the stuff and even got to go down in the basement and dig around. I ended up buying some sparkly mystique and a cute leo for my little cousin's birthday - all for $15! Maurya ended up with new foot undeez - super cute ones with pink. :-)
Obviously we were hungry after all that shopping....Kristi lives near the outlet/PGM and said we could follow her on the back roads to an Isaac's that was pretty close to TC and then we'd be about 10 mins away from work. Sounded good right? So we all started following Kristi down the winding roads of Wrightsville. About 10 minutes later, she pulled off to the side with a flat tire! So, all four of us are on the side of the road, watching the trucks fly by (Wrightsville is little hilly roads full of BIG trucks who make up time on the flat ground because they have to take the hills at 10mph with their blinkers on), trying to figure out what to do. We figured we could change the tire but it would probably take a couple hours....plus we all had work clothes on! However, we had ended up in front of this house that was getting its roof repaired (ie: construction guys). Probably the only house for about 10 miles and luckily we had ended up there. They were waving at us, trying to figure out what was going on. We waved back and one of them came down to make sure it wasn't a wreck and changed the tire for us - took him 15 minutes! We thanked him profusely! By the time we got to Isaac's everyone was starving - I ate an entire sandwich and that never happens!
We made it back to work around 1pm - a little later then planned because of the tire but what are you going to do? Jessica showed Ashley and I how to do the paperwork for our leos on the computer. One of the programs we use is from the Dark Ages! I'm positive it's older then me, it might be older then dirt. The screen is black with those green block letters and it reminds me of when everything was MS DOS. That's going to take some getting use to... Paperwork will probably take up my half day tomorrow...depending on how long I have to fight with the computer!

And the adventures continue....
Friday June 17th
Half day! Perform Group's summer hours end at noon on Fridays :-) Sara was out today on a business trip and Amy and Jessica (other designers) don't work Fridays during the summer, so somehow it ended up being just the three interns in the design department today. Carol had left us a project to do - making a display board of the 2011 accessories and props as a resource so we worked on that - cutting boards, making copies, cutting the images, sorting, taping, etc. I also went into the sample cutting room for a bit and talked to Sharon and Linda, two of the sewers. Sharon is in charge and Linda does the leos. Linda showed me what she was working on and then she let me mark some of the pieces that she would be assembling later. I also got to watch her put an applique on a leo using the heat press.
Monday June 20th
This morning, Linda came out and asked me if I wanted to come watch her glue some of the leos - she was assembling the ones I had marked on Friday. They use a air pressure tool with a foot pedal to apply the glue through a syringe - all those appliqued pieces have to be glued down before they can be zigzagged. The glue used is washable so it will come completly out in the first washing and won't lose any stretch. This is how all the Alpha leos are done but this was actually a fancy tank for the Holiday Aerials line that she was working on. The rest of the day Ashley and I finished up our design project and printed out the sketches.
Tuesday June 21st
Today was our design review for the gymnastics project. Ashley and I each presented our designs (4-5 Aerials, 3 Alpha and 1 warmup) to all three designers and they gave us feedback, suggestions and told us which we'd be taking through the entire process and might get to see in the catalog in a year :-) It sounds likely that I'll see some of my designs in at least the Aerials Pro Shop catalog (workout leos) for 2012 so that's pretty exciting. Jessica will be helping us work on the paperwork over the next week and then we'll see them start to go through the sample process - patterns to cutting to finished samples!
After that, Sara showed the three interns what we will be doing with excess fabric in order to get it ready to sell on ebay. Ashley and I will be in charge of the measuring and Maurya will photograph, upload and sell them. Luckily everyone wore flats today because we ended up climbing on a ladder in the warehouse to get to some of the excess bolts!
On Tuesday afternoon, Ashley and I worked some more on measuring and labeling fabric for the ebay store. Mid afternoon, Sara invited us to participate in an interview of an intern candidate for the fall. This would be the first time they have a non summer intern. Perform Group is trying to support co-op programs. There will be another candidate tomorrow. It was interesting to get a chance to look at someone else's portfolio from a different school and compare to what I see at my school.
Wednesday June 22nd
In the morning, Ashley and I spent more time working on the fabric project and also spent some time talking to Jessica about upcoming events and trips we will be going on - dance competitions, our NY trips, etc. Right after lunch we participated in another interview for the fall intern position.

Wednesday and Thursday
Wednesday June 15th
This morning, I did a project for Sara. With every Aerials catalog, some of the overstock fabric is made into very basic tank leos and sold super cheap (value tanks!). I got to do the paperwork for the Holiday 2011 value tanks. Sara gave me a handful of swatches and then I had to draw up a layout in Illustrator (using the tank flat), go into the raw materials drive, find the correct swatches, drop them into the tank, decide if they would get a white or black logo and type it all up on my document. I also did another little project for her - utilizing my excellent xacto skills. It has to do with the cover of the upcoming Curtain Call catalog so it's a secret, but basically I made a template for something :) In the afternoon, Ashley, Maurya and I watched the video of the 2010 Dance Teacher Summit Fashion Forward show and then we gave Sara suggestions for what costumes Curtain Call will send next year - first year they are participating! It's basically a runway show with dance attire and dancer models.
Thursday June 16th
When we got to work, Sara had left us a list of things to gather for the Fashion Forward show - everything has to be shipped on Monday and Sara is out today and tomorrow. Bev from the sample room brought us the garments that Sara had selected, along with tights and some accessories. First, we had to go upstairs to Marketing and talk to Donna and Marissa about how to label them and where to get the photos from. Next, we went to the warehouse and found garment bags. Ashley set to work on typing up labels while Maurya and I checked to make sure each garment had the correct tights and accessories and bagged them. A couple of times we had to get them to pull another accessory from stock or go on a hunt through the building to find a certain flower pin! During our searches Maurya and I had an adventure in the stage setup storage that involved some shoes that were older then we were - and a mountain of dust! :-) After lunch, we worked on a project for Carol. Carol is the Senior Buyer and is in charge of all the accessories that we use. Translation - her office was filled with boxes of accessories. We pulled everything out and basically took over the design room. Back to the warehouse for more boxes and we were set! First we sorted things into general caregories, then we went through and sorted them by "old" and "current", using the new accessories layout for referance. Current each got labeled with masking tape and the style number and put into labeled boxes. It was basically like playing dress up for three hours - Carol kept coming out of her office and finding us wearing headbands, wigs, sparkly belts, etc. Carol had some more stuff for us to work on in the afternoon - making some copies and doing some paperwork and tomorrow we are going to make a display board of all the current accessories.

More internship!
Friday June 10th
Half day! It was pretty quiet because summer hours had officially started and some of the departments were taking off. The first thing Ashley and I did was cut swatches for Sara to send to a customer thinking about a custom skirt. We cut and labeled two sets, one for the customer and one for the representative in that area plus kept a tiny swatch with label for Sara. We spent a couple hours working on design work and then at the end of the morning, we helped Sara move the binders we’d emptied out to a storage room upstairs – six boxes worth!
Monday June 13th
After lunch, Ashley and I went to a meeting about next years TRENDS (mini catalog put out by Curtain Call in the fall). We got to hear about the successes and failures of the past TRENDS and set some dates for planning for this year. Since it is supposed to be the latest, up to the moment trends, the design work will be done as late as possible and it will be a big rush to get it out. Besides Ashley and I there were two designers, the head of marketing, another Ashley - one of the relationship managers, Jessica, the marketing communications manager, the marketing intern (Maurya, it was her first day) and the owner, Mr. King. Ashley and I will be doing some joint project with Maurya this summer. After the meeting, we went back down to the design department. Sara had a project for Maurya to work on and Ashley and I will be helping when we have time. Curtain Call is selling rem bags of their fabric scraps instead of throwing them out – but someone has to fill the bags! That would be us. Ashley and I needed a break from the computers so we helped Maurya trim headers off and stuff bags until it was time to go. After work, I made the decision to go skate at the York rink for an hour and I’m so glad I did! Apparently there was a really bad accident on Rt 30 right about 4pm – when I would have been driving home – and I would have been sitting there for an hour. Instead, I got to skate with Richanda on some almost empty ice. :-)
Tuesday June 14th
Spent the morning finishing up all my designs for Aerials and Alpha Factor. I’ve been greatly inspired by this project to make leotards for my little cousin. Mid morning, Ashley and I went into the sample room and talked to Linda who sews the samples for Aerials and Alpha. She was super nice and told us all about the construction while she assembled a teeny pink leotard in child XS – so tiny! She has worked her for 45 years – her first and only job. Mrs. King (the current Mr. Tighe King’s mother) taught her to sew. Hopefully tomorrow morning she’ll have some more leotards to sew so we can watch some more. I’m in love with the binding machines and it is my goal to own one. Can you imagine the things I could do?? I bet they are super expensive though... I was inspired when I got home to make a leotard for my little cousin who is going to gymnastics camp next week - everyone needs a new leo for camp :-D

Week Three

Hard to believe I've already been working at Perform Group for almost three weeks! This summer is flying by! This photo is of one of the hallways by the design department - they are lined with photos of old Curtain Call/Alpha Factor costumes!
The week started off exciting – we had a fire drill on Monday morning! The first day that we were here, Sharon, who is in charge of the design/pattern/sample depts. for evacuation, showed Ashley and me where to go when the alarm goes off so we were prepared. She had warned us that we would probably have one this summer. We stood around in the parking lot for a few minutes and then got to come back inside. Fire drills are a lot easier when you aren’t the one responsible for making sure everyone is out of the building – I can sympathize with Sharon. The rest of the day was spent working on designs for Alpha Factor Aerials, the workout/pro shop line. Ashley and I are each doing four designs. I don’t know that any of our designs will actually end up in the catalog at this point but we are learning the entire process. Sara showed us the templates they use – all the illustrations for Aerials, Alpha Factor (competitive gymnastics line) and Curtain Call are done in Illustrator – which I love. The only thing I don’t love is that I’m using CS2 L I’m so spoiled at school with CS5.
On Tuesday, we worked more on the Aerials designs. Ashley and I walked around the back of the warehouse and looked at/swatched some of the overstock fabrics to inspire us more. Sara also gave us the project information for our Alpha Factor design project – three leotards and a warm up jacket. In the afternoon we did some research for that – pouring over catalogs from years past and looking at competitors designs on their websites to spot trends. We also put together a trend inspiration board for Hip Hop/Tap/Jazz for a presentation to the Board of Directors. They plus Mr. King came in the afternoon to see how the design part of the company works so Ashley and I took all the images that the designers had used for research and inspiration for this section and cut out some of our favorites/ones we thought represented the section as a whole best and taped them to a presentation board. Sara also had some finished costumes to show them, along with sketches, cutters musts, the whole process basically.
Wednesday wasn’t very exciting – just working on designs for Aerials and Alpha Factor all day. Soooo, I’m going to write about what we did last Wednesday that I forgot to write about. Last Wednesday, Ashley and I went to one of the last fittings of the year for Curtain Call – again Tap/Jazz/Hip Hop. These are the same outfits we saw photographed but different sizes – each costume is made in adult medium and child medium and tried on at the exact same time by the two fit models. Each patternmaker is there for “her” garments, along with each designer. The adult model is Amy, one of the pattern makers and they bring in a child model – Abby. They would put the costume on, then the designer and pattern maker would check it against the spec sheet and the sketch. Any adjustments were pinned and written on the spec sheet. Usually it was something simple like the straps needed to be shorter (this was a final fitting, not an initial so most adjustments had already been made). Sometimes the costume was fine and nothing needed to be changed.
Today, Ashley and I worked on designs most of the day. Right before lunch, we went into the pattern room and talked to another Amy (there’s a lot of them here ) about the pattern drafting limitations for Alpha Factor and her role. Things like how many layers you can have, how big points need to be on cutouts, glitz vs laser stones, etc. We also watched Jessica, one of the designers, put together the layout for Holiday 2011 Aerials. All week the sample leos have been coming in for approval/snapshots so they can line up models, etc.
It was super hot out (95) so we didn't go for a walk like normal. Usually, we take a walk either in the morning or afternoon as a little break but it was too hot today :-(

Days 7 & 8

Yesterday and today were similar. Ashley and I started clearing out some binders and drawers full of old fabric samples and trims - dating back to 98! There are more coming all the time so it was time to make some room. We were clearing out anything from before 2009. We both like to organize so this was fun for us. We would work on it for a bit, then usually someone would be doing something else that we could watch for a little, then we'd go back. This week and next week are crazy because everyone is rushing to get the catalog finished and printed. Sara is in meeting after meeting!! Yesterday afternoon, we helped Kristy swatch for randoms. These are printed photographs of each outfit/models, just on a white background with the style number and we have to cut swatches of each fabric, for each costume and tape it next to it so the graphic designers know how to color correct the photos. There are also notes written on here such as "lengthen short leg to match other", etc. Sometimes it's really easy to swatch randoms because there is a book for each section (ie: Jazz) with the design sketch and swatches that you can cut from but sometimes a certain fabric isn't there. In that case, we had to go into the warehouse, find the costume, then find the fabric and then swatch it.
Thursday morning, Sara brought out all of the Alpha Factor/Aerials catalogs going back to about 1993 so that Ashley and I could look through them and see how the styles had changed and evolved over the years. We will be working on a gymnastics design project pretty soon so she wanted to give us some ideas. After we looked through the catalogs, we went upstairs and talked to Wendy Martin who heads up the gymnastics section. While not a designer, she has a lot of input in what ends up in the Alpha Factor catalog because she knows gymnastics. She is hysterically funny and can talk for hours - we probably talked to her for 45 minutes or more. She went over two entire catalogs with us, telling us what sells, what doesn't and why.
After we talked to Wendy, we spent more time cleaning out. It was neat to see all of the fabrics/trims that Perform Group had used in the past 10 years. Sara said we could keep anything we wanted of the trims/applique samples, since we were just trashing it, so both Ashley and I scored some goodies :) Take a look at my free stuff below.

Days 5 & 6
Day five, aka Friday :), was only a half day. I spent the entire time in a meeting. Sara brought Ashley and I along to a preliminary layout meeting for Jazz/Tap/Hip Hop, which are the outfits that we got to see photographed earlier in the week. Mike, the graphic designer came in and set up his laptop (MacBook :) ) and we each had a printed copy to look at. All the designers were there, plus a couple people from Advertising and John. We looked at each costume and layout and talked about the placement of the models, the background plus the copy. The actual copy will be added next week, right now there is just placeholders. This was only a small section of the catalog and it took us over 3 hours to check it! As we would come to a background, if it was clashing with the costumes, Mike could change the color right there so we could see. A couple of times we had to swap things for the best look. By the time we were done, it was almost noon and time to head home for the day.
Monday was Memorial Day, which I spent going for a 4 mile walk with my dad and brother and then hanging by the pool - our A/C died :( and it was over 90 out. It was great motivation to get up at 5 on Tuesday and go to the cool ice rink before work! On Tuesday, I spent the morning in a proofing. This time we met in the "Showroom", a room with a stage and lighting that can be used to check how costumes look under lights. It is also used as a conference room. Sara, the Senior Designer and my supervisor was there, along with one of the other designers, Donna from Advertising (she ran the photo shoot and basically organizes the catalog), some of the women who keep track of the fabrics, accessories, and all the numbering/labeling that goes with that and also two of the patternmakers to check numbers. We each had a mock up layout again and a print out of the real copy. For each outfit, Pat would read off the copy and Cheryl would check the numbers on her master list. Basically, we were checking to make sure all accessories were listed, if anything was included with the costume, that everything had a name and that all the lists matched each other before it gets mailed out to everyone. This was a first proofing for Tap/Jazz/Hip Hop, there will be several more once the copy is in the layout. Again, it took almost till lunch.
After lunch, Ashley and I researched competitors websites and made notes about them for Sara. I'm a very harsh judge of websites and many of these were BAD! We looked at probably 15-20 between the two of us and I liked 4....luckily I like Curtain Call's ;-)
